Here we are again!

So the Holiday season is here upon us again. It seems that we start earlier and earlier each year. Black Friday sales already starting this weekend. I am not ready for it!

This year, however, may be a little easier for me. I no longer have an Etsy shop open and do not have to worry about creating projects that will just sit there and not sell. I have racked my brain as to why my stuff wouldn't sell and it is just that so many people can crochet my items are no longer "different." Oh well, back to the subject at hand..

My husband and I were discussing Christmas gifts for my two daughters. Every year we get them things that end up being played with for maybe two weeks tops and then get thrown in the closet to collect dust. So we have been trying to rack our brains as to what to do. I have a large amount of yarn and craft supplies sitting in my office closet. You crafters will know what I mean when I say play supplies. Those things that are left over from bigger projects and are just lying around awaiting a way to be used.

So I got an inventory done of these scrap items and dug through patterns and did online searches for patterns and have the starting of a plan!

My youngest loves Barbies and has about 8 of them. She loves to take of the clothes and play dress up. So I am going to make her a bunch of crochet clothes for them and then make a plastic canvas bed that doubles as a storage chest. My oldest daughter is going to get a media purse to carry her MP3 player in and some stuff for her stuffed cats for which she has a lot of. That is the beginning of the plans. Luckily these projects are fast moving and I can work on them after the girls go to bed.

I wonder how many others will be doing the same? Please feel free to share!

Wow....Education

Yesterday I met with my daughters first grade teacher. I have to say..She gets it! This has been a rough start of the year for my Shelby. She loved school so much and this year has decided that it ain't much fun. Sad for a first grader.

I remember some of my time in first grade so many years ago (Nope, Alzheimer's had no settled in yet, LOL). I remember learning how to form my letters right and just learning my numbers. Oh the memories of the playground time and fun with friends.....

Well, my daughter won't have those kind of fond memories. She is really starting to learn basic algebra. No longer is it enough to learn that 1+1=2 in the first grade, you now have to know the "concept" of 1+1=2. Facts are not acceptable alone anymore. Here is a sample problem from a first grade math homework sheet. No keep in mind as you are looking at this that in kindergarten they just learned to recognize numbers and not add them (we did work on that some over the summer) and that it is just a month in.

David has some tomatoes.
He throws away 5 rotten tomatoes.
He has 4 tomatoes left.
How many tomatoes did he have at first?

_____ - 5 = 4
5 + 4 = _____ is the related addition fact.
He had _____ tomatoes at first.

Now, to a person experienced with math, this is not a rough problem. But to a first grader who has not even had basic math, this is a challenge.

I was very upset with this and Shelby has not had the easiest time with it so I met with her teacher. My question really was why the students were not prepared for this move to math? At the end of the school year last year we were given some "suggestions" for things to do over the summer to help with the transition to first grade and we did them all and then some. But, BOOM, all the prep we did did not prepare her enough.

Come to find out that the change was initiated like just 2 weeks before the start of classes! So not only were students and parents not prepared, but neither were the teachers! I was no surprised to find this out, however, because that is the way things are done in this school district.

The teacher explained the math lessons and why and how and gave me information as to how I can help Shelby succeed with this math program. It is called Focus on Math and it is based on the Singapore math process. I still think that it is too early to be pushing basic algebra on first graders, but they need to be prepared for college by the time they are 10(sarcastic). LOL.

But, the teacher got it! She understood my frustration and even shared some. She likes the math program and explained to my why and now I understand and will support it any way that I can. I am elated and happy that she took the time out with me. That is what a teacher should do and now I feel that my daughters education is truly a joint effort between me and the teacher for this year.

I have signed up Shelby for a supplemental course, however, on Time4Learning. I still feel that the basics and "rules" are important to learn for that core understanding and now I will have that supplemental support for at home.

Well, enough for now. More to come soon :-)

Wow, an introduction.

Wow! Now that is a word that says sooo much and yet only takes a second to say!

Seriously now, just stand and say Wow and see the types of response you get from others. Some will look in the direction you are looking, some will ask you what is going on and others will look at you like you just escaped from the local mental institute (I seem to get a lot of the latter).

Whenever you hear or say the word Wow, you think exciting, amazing and more often in my case what the heck??

I have had these "what the heck" Wows a lot. Watching the news, reading the digital paper as I am trying to save the environment by burning up electricity created by burning coal so I can save a tree by not using paper (yes I am being sarcastic) or dealing with the wonderful education system that is trying their darnedest to mess up my child's education (teachers are good, it is just the system of curriculum that they are forced to use by "the experts" that messed up, or at least that is what I am hoping).

I am planning on touching on these issues a little each day this week. Of course, I my have a WTF Wow moment and throw in the towel. Tune in to see!

Now.....

Okay, I am sitting here at this falling apart desk in my cramped little office and thinking to myself, hmmmm......

I have a new desk that is to be delivered today and need to start packing up things and move things around so I can tear down this desk and get the new one set up. It should be here something early this afternoon, but I won't start putting it together until tomorrow. I have to work a couple hours tonight and if I start on it late and something goes wrong I won't have a place to work and that would be a very bad thing :-)

I am kinda at a lost on how to fix up this office to make it an environment for me and my two little ones to work in comfortably. I use it also during the evenings when working, but I also use this space for education. I do homeschooling for my preschooler and over the summer will continue the learning process with my daughter who is just finishing up her first year of school and will be heading to the first grade in the fall. I really need this area to be user friendly and comfortable for all of us.

The biggest problem is the fact that this room has become a catch all. We are waiting for my brother in law to make a decision about the huge entertainment center that is sitting in here and the TV. He needs to find someone to help him move it. If it is not gone in a week I am just going to set it out on the street with a FREE sign on it! I also have boxes upon boxes of crochet goods and supplies and really need to do something with those. The supplies will be used though and I am looking into things to do with the finished products. Visit my shop and help me out,,,PLEASE ☺☺☺♥♥♥☺☺☺

Well, I need to get busy and get the process started. In some ways I feel that getting this room back into order is maybe a start of getting my life back on the tract that I want it. Wish me luck!!!

What ever shall I do....

Okay, here is my thing... I have so many things that I need to incorporate into a schedule and I am having a rough time figuring out how to do it!

Those who know me personally may be a bit surprised. Organization used to be a big thing for me and something that I use to be able to do without any trouble. It seems, however, that since the birth of my last two children, that ability has seem to left me gradually over the past few years. I thought that when I started staying at home full time that it would be a breeze. HA, was I ever wrong!

I sit down with good intentions, but it seems I have a rough time accomplishing what I want to do! It seems that there are too many things to distract me. Not all of those things are bad though. I love my little ones and when they want me or need me they of course come first! Then the hubby of course! And then crocheting and housework and transcription and etc....

I love my life and guess that I will just go with the flow and enjoy life and just get done what I can. You only live once (at least in my belief) here on earth and you just have to take time to smell the roses!!!!

Thankful Thursday. I, in my rush to get so many things done, often times forget what I need and should be thankful for. I forgot this until I started reading some of the blogs that I follow so.....What can I say :-)

I am thankful today for so many things. The first thing is to some maybe minor, but to me major..I am thankful not to have a migraine today. I have been having a lot of them lately and just got over a doozy, so for that I am very thankful.

I am thankful for a husband who comes home from work early when my head hurts and takes care of my little angels so I can close my eyes and rest.

I am at last but not least thankful for my children. My son who is out there living his own life and the two little daughters given to us when we thought there would be none. All three are the joys of my life, even if they don't realize it!

So Happy Today

I just feel so happy today! I am not really sure as to why, but I am. It could be that the sun is out and it is warm. It could be because I feel so blessed to have a loving husband and 3 adorable children ,even if my son feels he is too big for his momma. It may be because I am almost done with my newest afghan project (would be finished if I got off of this computer, LOL).

What ever the reason I wish I could feel like this all the time!!!

Please be patient

Okay, so life has been a little busy for me to say the least. I am trying to finish up the remodel of the bathroom, trying to finish up my latest afghan, tyring to be a good wife and mother (hahaha) and work! I know that many people are in the same predicament as I am and have a lot more on their plate, but to me this is a lot.

I just wanted to drop in to let those of you how read this, that I have not disappeared and that I should be back in full swing soon. I am hoping to have the bathroom done tomorrow at the latest. We ran into some problems with the installation of the vanity and ended up having to call in plumbers to finish the job, and a great job they did I must say. The plumbing in the house is old and adjustments had to be made that I could not do nor did I have the tools to do. It did not put us out of budget too much, which is a good thing. Then we realized that the wall in which we were going to put up a new medicine cabinet was not strong enough to support it and the studs did not line up right to put it in. We have decided to put up just a plain mirror and for now have my decorative bedroom mirror up. I think we are going to pick up a new mirror tonight. But that is the saga. I will have pics soon and you can tell me whatcha think.

My crocheting has been neglected and I can really feel it! I think that I crocheted a little Friday, but that has been it. I will do some today.

Speaking of that, I better sign off for now so I can get to the point in which I can sit down and crochet!

Later all!!!!!!

EGAD

Over the past week I have been working on a new afghan to place in my shop. I was hoping to have it completed for listing today, BUT it had other things in mind!

I have had to take the thing apart 4 different occasions! I for the life of me could not figure out what I was doing wrong. The first time I took it apart, I had to remove over 30 rows! Which when those are done in rounds, is a very tough thing! The ends were curling in on themselves and kept doing it for the next 3 tries.

On the fourth (which I was not going to do at first I was just going to try something different) I realized that I was reading a pattern note in reverse of what it was suppose to be! I could not believe it!!! I usually pay such close attention to detail that I cannot believe that I made that mistake! I guess with all the sickness in the family and trying to do soo many things, I did not have the focus that I needed. Oh well, it is now going well and I am aiming to have it completed to post next week!!

I have about 5 more new items that I need to photograph and post. I have just seemed to have difficulty getting to this mainly because of lighting and then some camera issues. I aint the best photographer but I am getting there!

We are getting ready to start the remodeling and redecorating of our house. We are going to do all of it ourselves! Except I think new carpeting, after 15 years it is time!! We tiled our living room floor a few years ago and miss the carpet so it is going back down and in the bedrooms and hallway our carpet is literally falling apart! I think it be time! We are going to paint first though cuz with little ones paint will most likely end up on the floor, LOL!

My daughters have a tendency to like to write on walls sometimes when they are in their creative mode and daddy is watching them, hahaha! SO to alleviate any issues and so they have a creative outlet, we are going to paint the lower half of our hallway with chalkboard paint and let them at it! I want the creativity to flow, but not destroy all the hard work that I am going to be putting in to this job! It has been sooo long since we have done any work to the inside of the house and it need so desperately to be done.

I am planning on posting photos and updates as we get them done! Hubby and I are going to make a photo album of before and after. Stay tuned!

New Items Coming to My Shop

I love to try new things and patterns. I get these "mystery bags" from online suppliers every once in awhile and you never know what you are going to get. Sometime you get some really nice yarn, but it may not be enough for a project that you initially had in mind. Enter in my 5-year-old daughter who loves looking through my literately hundreds of patterns. She found patterns for a few things that were perfect for my mystery boxes!

This first is made from a pattern that was on a skein of Red Heart yarn. It is a wrap that has a little slit in it to hold it around the shoulders. I was such a neat project to do! My daughter enjoyed hers greatly and she said that I should make more for others to enjoy! So here is the first one for my shop. It is done is in a dark coral color and would be perfect for those spring time evenings that are just around the corner!

This second wrap I am not sure where the pattern came from. It was one that was hand written so I am not sure if it is one that I created or if it was from someone else. I therefore do not take created for the pattern, just the work to make the project. It had no picture with it so I was not sure what the finished project would even remotely look like. My daughter just pulled out this piece of paper from my packet and said, "Mommy, I think that this will look nice." I guess she may be a psychic because the finished product turned out wonderful!

I have never done shawls or wraps before. It is hard to believe because there are so many things that I have made since I learned how to crochet when I was around like 6 or 7 years of age. I enjoyed making these and have plans to try out a few more! I have another mystery box coming and hope there are some great goodies in it.

I still have some from my last mystery yarn box that I have not figured out what to do with. It is a chunky and very bulky yarn that is not the easiest to work with, but the challenge is fun!

I hope to have these listed to my shop at www.mrs13.etsy.com by the weekend! Come by an pay me a visit. Any items that are their I will be happy to make custom for you! Just convo me and I will see what I can do!

Looking out my Window

I am sitting here looking out my window
And what is it I see?
Grey skys without the sun
Looking back at me.

I say to my self
What can I do
To make the sun shine through?

And then the though comes...

CROCHET AGAIN!

My Sister in Cahoots Hamna

Some people are just born with it! Talent! And my friend and sister in cahoots is one of those people! When she was 12 she started sewing. She did not start with a simple little project, she went big with an outfit. I for one am happy that she did that and did not listen to those who told her she could not do it! Now as a wife and mother, she sews for her family and everyone looks forward to what they will be wearing at the next gathering.

My daughter who is 5 look at a lot of things online together and as an Etsy seller myself, I spen a lot of time on that site and we like to look at shops together. Hamn's shop is one of her favorite! She wants to save up her allowance so she can "buy somting". Mommy will help her of course. ☺

So come and check it out!!!

I really hate being sick! I have been totally knocked off of my feet for a couple of days and am just now starting to feel better. Now I am so far behind on so many things that it ain't funny. Well, really it is if you really look at it! LOL!

Well, Valentines Day is quickly coming upon us and I really must get my list out there. I am doing this publicly so my darling hubby might pay closer attention to what I want and if I do not get it I will shame him endlessly!

Seriously, I have a very loving hubby who took time off of work to handle my daughters while I was ill, so I would never shame him much, HAHAHA!

So here it goes, my list continues......
